It was the last weeks of winter, when I visited Baroliya village in Dharampur (India). Here a unique initiative was under its way by an ex-service man (ex-military), Dinkar Patel with the help of fellow service man Kumar Uttambhai to train young boys and girls of tribal households to appear for police force and defence selection. The activity was being carried out under the aegis of Maji Sainik Kalyan Ane Adivasi Pragati Kendra (Ex-Service Men & Tribal Population Welfare Centre). Dinkar is committed towards this cause and is glad to help the children of tribal households in defence training. He believes that his experience in Indian Army comes handy while training and motivating the students to attempt and realize their dreams.

The centre now has more than 100 students who were selected after rigorous medical and physical test. The committed trainers prepare batches after batches of students who further appear for various selection procedures. Since its inception, students have been selected in State Reserve Police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Central Reserve Police Force and Border Security Force. The students are determined to mend their own ways to secure a bright future in security forces. For some its sheer passion to work for the nation, where as for some it’s a medium to empower themselves. As Jayshree Jimodiya one of the aspirants puts it “the dream to earn for my family has encouraged me to join the programme. It has given me ample opportunities to explore my inner strength to withstand hurdles and see the light at the end of the tunnel”.
